Doomed World: Space is a Cold Place
The World:
The year is 3409. The galaxy has been more or less explored, with the many races of the cosmos spreading out to claim its riches. The galaxy is in a tentative state of peace, brought on roughly 700 years ago, when the Old Gods retreated, taking their holy magic with them. The absence of the divine that followed spelled disaster for not just its practitioners, but for the billions that received the benefits as well. Recovery and revival magic still exists, but is much rarer and exceedingly expensive. This had the effect of sparking a galactic peace, though the gears of commerce must still turn. There will always be a need for those willing to risk themselves for the right price.
The Crew:
You are a crewmember of the Saragossa, a salvaging vessel in one of the less trafficked areas of the galaxy. The Saragossa Salvaging Corp was founded 12 years ago by the Captain, the Pilot, and the Salvager (Veteran). In that time, the crew has made a solid living, employing a Doctor around 7 years ago, as well as an additional Salvager, still affectionately called Rookie, despite their 2 years of service. The Captain ensures that various business connections are maintained, and that the crew always has work. The Pilot flies the Saragossa, handling the charter as well as maneuvering during operations. The Doctor keeps the crew healthy, assessing hazardous conditions and patching minor injuries. The Salvagers are the workload of the crew, going on spacewalks to break down various wrecks, as well as repairing the Saragossa.
The Mission:
The primary targets of the Saragossa include contracted decommissions, the odd shipwreck, and all manner of abandoned facilities. In this particular case, the Saragossa has just completed a job for breaking down an ancient manufacturing facility, dropping off any recyclable components at an extraplanetary station. The crew was looking forward to a few days of relaxation, but unfortunately, duty calls. After refueling and restocking, the Captain ordered everyone back into the ship for an urgent job in a distant system.
